Agate

Agates are a type of chalcedony. Lace Agate, common semiprecious silica mineral, a variety of chalcedony that occurs in bands of varying colour and transparency. Brecciated agate is a naturally amalgamated matrix of broken agate fragments. In other words, it's broken agates stuck together to make one big agate.

Colors They Come In - Blue, Black, Green, Red, White, Pink, Yellow, Grey, Purple, Brown, Orange

Fracture - Conchoidal

Shape - Commonly you will find them spherical or flat form but Polyhedroid agate forms in a flat-sided shape similar to a polyhedron. When sliced, it often shows a characteristic layering of concentric polygons. It has been suggested that growth is not crystallographically controlled but is due to the filling-in of spaces between pre-existing crystals which have since dissolved.

Locality: Oregon, Wyoming, Montana, Arizona, Idaho, California, Washington, New Mexico, Iowa, Wisconsin, Michigan, Minnesota, Utah, Colorado, Arkansas, and Nevada in the U.S.

Where They Can Be Found - Agates are commonly found in cavities in volcanic rock, where silica-rich water deposited quartz crystals layer by layer parallel to the cavity wall.


Here are some tips for finding agates: 
Look for agates in places where water has been present, such as the tops of hills and ridges, or in scree or rock fall areas.
